Orthodontic Appliances in Atlanta, GA

Appliances are used in conjunction with braces to achieve a specific goal. Some appliances are used prior to braces, some during braces treatment and some after treatment for adding a finishing touch or for maintenance. Here is a list of the most common appliances used in Atlanta:

Appliances Used Prior To Treatment

  • Palatal Expander – A palatal expander is a fixed device that widens the upper jaw to correct crossbites or crowding. The expander puts slight pressure on the upper molars during each adjustment. Braces are typically used after a palatal expander is removed.
  • Separators or Spacers – Separators are small rubber bands that are placed between the back molars to make space prior to applying braces. In some cases, bands replace the separators and serve as a support for brace wires. In other cases, the bands simply make enough room to avoid plaque build-up and cavities.

Appliances Used During Treatment

  • Elastics (Rubber Bands) – Elastics, also known as rubber bands, attach to braces brackets to move the teeth and jaw into the proper position. Rubber bands are highly effective for aligning the bite when worn as directed.
  • Forsus™ Fatigue Resistant Device – A Forsus™ fatigue resistant device corrects overbites and functions like a non-removable headgear. The device is attached to the back molars and uses springs to correct excessive overbites.
  • Headgear – A headgear is a removable device that gently tugs on your teeth to prevent your teeth and jaw from moving forward. The device slides through metal hooks that are attached to braces to correct overbites and underbites.
  • Herbst® Appliance – A Herbst® appliance is used to reduce an overbite by helping the lower jaw move into a forward position. The appliance is fixed and is typically worn by younger children who are still growing for approximately 12 to 15 months.

Appliances Used After Treatment

  • Positioners – Positioners are removable plastic devices that make final adjustments to teeth after braces have been removed. Positioners are typically worn only at night for approximately four to eight weeks.
  • Retainers – Retainers are worn after teeth have been straightened to keep newly aligned teeth in place. Most retainers are removable, but in some cases, fixed retainers are used. Care instructions will be provided when you receive your retainer. To avoid regression, retainers should be worn as directed.

"I am another happy patient at iClear Orthodontics! I am in invisalign treatment and can already see changes in 4 months! I have been to both Roswell and Alpharetta locations and they are very contemporary and up to date! 5 stars all the way!" - Emily Thomas
"Dr. Patel and his staff are incredible! We (I and my 12 year old daughter) recommend his orthodontic services to everyone we know when they say they need orthodontics done right. The staff at his office is friendly, and they know how to answer questions, which goes a long way toward feeling comfortable with an orthodontist. Our 12 year old child now has a beautiful smile, and it’s all thanks to his excellent care. He never recommends orthodontic treatment unless it's needed, and that really makes a difference. Our 2nd…" - Kimberly T
"Dr. Thakkar and the staff at iClear Orthodontics are completely professional, from start to finish. They explain the process, the treatments, and even go over our insurance with us so that we know how our claims will be handled. There were no questions that didn’t have an answer, and by the time we left his office, I was sure that I wouldn’t want to send my kids to anyone else for the services he offers" - Justin D. Thomson
"We love visiting their Kennesaw location... Great staff, very pleasant and honest orthodontist and our 10 year old loves Dr Patel! Only issue we have sometimes is traffic at 5pm... We try to schedule our appointments around 3:30 to beat the Chastain Rd traffic." - Karen Houstin
